The Apu Trilogy
(4K Restoration) – 70th Anniversary
Thursday,
November 27 – Wednesday, December 17
Two decades
after its original negatives were burned in a fire, Satyajit Ray’s breathtaking
milestone of world cinema rises from the ashes in a meticulously reconstructed
new 4K restoration by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Essential
for any film lover, Satyajit Ray’s trilogy of masterworks trace the life of
Bengali boy Apu from childhood innocence to adolescent education into the all
too real tragedies of adulthood. Based on two books by Bibhutibhusan Banerjee,
the three films were shot over the course of five years, and each stands on its
own as a tender, visually radiant journey.
The Trilogy
serve as a breathtaking milestone that brought India into the golden age of
international art-house film and introduced Satyajit Ray to the world of
filmmakers, these films are among the most achingly beautiful, richly humane
movies ever made.
“Never
having seen a Satyajit Ray film is like never having seen the sun and the
moon.” – Akira
Kurosawa
